Finding Dory (2016) Review: Unforgettably Charming

Thirteen years after Finding Nemo, the animation-wizards at Pixar have finally given us a sequel that is worth the wait as Nemo, Merlin and the lovable Dory swim back in to our hearts for one more adventure.  It may have been a generation since our favourite animated fish have appeared on screen but Finding Dory feels incredibly natural as a sequel by further exploring the characters we know and love as well as introducing some more favourites that will be loved by all – with a special mention of Gerald the sea lion.

As the title would suggest, this film is all about the blue tang with the short-term memory problem, Dory (voiced by Ellen DeGeneres). Whereas Finding Nemo was, well, about finding Nemo, Finding Dory is more about Dory finding herself. More specifically: finding her family as she slowly starts to piece together fragments of memories and comes to a better understanding of who she is. In a sense Finding Dory has this great aura of nostalgia surrounding it where the audience that grew up with Finding Nemo are rediscovering their own childhood memories of watching these characters for the first time, but also the film is nostalgic for Dory as she is remembering her own childhood for the first time as well. This shared nostalgia makes Dory’s adventure just that more special and memorable.

In true Pixar fashion, Finding Dory is extremely heart-warming for children to enjoy and adults to really appreciate. There is no forced antagonist or plot points, nor are there moments that pander to the child audience that will be drawn to the film. The film is genuinely funny due to a mixture of well-developed characters, clever quirky writing, and fantastic comic timing that wins you over instantly to really make you care about every character’s situation which only makes the more touching sequences more emotional.

Pixar has once again illustrated that animated films can be amazing if the work has been put into it by a team of talented people that have a story they care about and want to share. Finding Dory is a film that everybody can love and appreciate for its brilliant characters, animation, humour, and storytelling. It is a sequel fitting of the original and will most certainly be seen and loved by generations to come.

  1. I haven’t seen this one yet but from the footage I’ve seen I’d say this looks incredibly aDORYble haha. I’ve waited so long for a Finding Nemo sequel so I hope it does it justice. I’m sure I will love this one just as much. Great review. Would you be interested in sharing your opinions on Moviepilot/Creators? Feel free to shoot me an e-mail if you’d like me to expand on that.
